Cabinet Staining

Restaining can be difficult. In order to stain your cabinets, you will need cabinets that are wood. Restaining is basically the same as painting, but the stain dries a lot quicker.

Here are some steps on how to stain kitchen cabinets:

1) Start by removing the doors and drawers.

2) Scrub and clean everything. Get all of the grime off. Let them dry.

3) Sand everything as much as you can. This will let the stain soak in, and stick. Use a fine grit sandpaper.

4) You will want to stain your cabinets away from everything. Use saw horses if you have them, or a table. Use a drop cloth if needed. Remember that they call it stain for a reason.

5) Stir the stain well. The stain separates and the color sits at the bottom of the can. If you do not stir it, your stain will be different colors the further you work. One of the best things to use is an old carpet to stain. Cut it into 4x3 pieces and dip it into the stain. Rub the carpet onto the wood and get all of the surfaces. Over staining is fine, because the excess can be whipped off. This can get pretty messy. Look and make sure that you did not miss any spots.

6) Now wipe off the stain. Most cans say to wait, but it doesn't usually change the color. Have lots of cotton rags. Do not touch the stain with your hand or a glove, it will leave a smudge. Start wiping. After you got most of the excess off, take a clean rag and wipe with the grain of the wood. This is important. It will help ensure that there are no smudges.

7) Set it flat or leaned against something. Leave it in an open area, the fumes are bad.

8) Now you are ready to paint a clear finish over your newly stained cabinets.
